A local parolee was arrested on felony drug charges Monday after parole officers attempting to serve a warrant on him at his home allegedly found fentanyl and other contraband in his possession.

Guy Russel Smyre, 51, of 162 Carol St., was taken into custody at his residence shortly before 12:30 p.m. and charged with possession of fentanyl with purpose to deliver and possession of drug paraphernalia, each punishable by up to 20 years in prison, and a second count of possession of drug paraphernalia, punishable by up to six years.

Smyre was being held on a zero bond and was arraigned Wednesday in Garland County District Court. According to court records, he was convicted on Aug. 31, 2020, of possession of a controlled substance, meth, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and two counts of felony failure to appear and sentenced to three years in prison, but later paroled. He was previously convicted in 2013 of theft by receiving over $5,000 and sentenced to four years' supervised probation.

According to the probable cause affidavit obtained Thursday, Arkansas Community Correction Special Response Team agents went to Smyre's residence to serve a parole warrant on him and made contact with him at the front door.

They advised him of the warrant and allowed him to go inside to his room to "put on shoes." As he was getting his shoes, Smyre asked if he could give his girlfriend his belongings and the agents told him he could.

At that point, Smyre allegedly took a wallet out of his pocket and put it on the bed and then tossed a small black case on the bed. When agents asked him what was in the case, Smyre reportedly said it was "earbuds."

The agents asked to see the contents and when they opened the case they allegedly found a small glass bottle containing 4.1 grams of what later tested positive for fentanyl, a synthetic opioid reportedly 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine.

The agents then contacted the 18th Judicial District East Drug Task Force, which responded to the scene to do a further search of the residence and reportedly found a set of scales, a syringe and a spoon with residue.

Smyre was taken into custody on the parole warrant and the other possession charges were later filed.
