Inglenook Market Delights With Thoughtful Homegoods in Beacon

When Heatherlyn Nelson opened Inglenook Marketplace in 2019, her vision was a store that had the feel and aesthetic of a Nora Ephron film—think the Shop Around the Corner in “You’ve Got Mail” crossed with the apothecary in “Practical Magic.”

“It’s always been important for me to [create] a place that feels like home,” says Nelson, the CEO, owner, and creative director of the store. “So not only would people walk into the store and think, ‘Wow, this is so cozy and smells so good I could stay here all day’—but they’d also want to buy things to bring home and be comforted by them.”

WHAT’S IN A NAME: According to Mirriam-Webster’s, “inglenook” is the nook by a large open fire. Nelson came across the word 12 years ago, before she started the e-commerce site that later evolved into her store. For her, the meaning connotes the heart of the home, “the place where everyone gathers to stay warm. And I thought, ‘That’s it, that’s the name.’”

DON’T MISS: Handmade candles, room sprays, incense, and apothecary items like bath salts and shampoo bars. They’re all made downstairs in Nelson’s atelier—including the packaging and design. If you’re looking for uniquely scented candles, you’ll want to pick up fan favorites like New York in the Fall (apples, cider donuts, and a woodsy smell) or Hygge (bayberry, eucalyptus, and juniper). Plus, once you’ve burned a candle, bring the jar back for a refill and 10 percent off. If you need more convincing: Inglenook just won our Best of Hudson Valley award for best HV-made candles.

COOLEST FEATURE: That would be the refillery, where you can bring a jar (or buy one at the shop) and fill up on laundry detergent, conditioner, or candle wax. It’s weighed for a price, and you take it home. Simple! “They’re all eco-friendly— it’s a zero-waste movement vibe,” she says.

OTHER PERKS: Everything you could want for your home from baskets and area rugs to vases and tableware. Nelson carefully curates each item. “I wouldn’t be a shop without being a maker. I don’t want to be just a run-of-the mill retail store that buys a bunch of products from all kinds of places and doesn’t really have a story behind them,” she says. “About 90 percent of the products in my shop are female made—created in the Hudson Valley, in New York State, or made in the U.S.” Sometimes Nelson comes up with the design, and then collaborates with local artisans. For instance, she worked with a potter to create the Afton Road ceramic line, which includes candle sticks and kitchenware. But whatever the item, it’s got to be timeless—not trendy. “My goal when I purchase a product is that it’s something people will want to live with for a really long time,” she says. Case in point: The recycled glass jars that hold her candles. “They’re super durable, with a beautiful green tint,” says Nelson. If customers don’t want to reuse the jars for candles they can serve as a spice jar or salt dish.
