A Leesburg man found guilty Monday of a 2017 felony battery also faces a murder trial in July for a 2017 alleged murder.

Steven A. Hammonds, 33, was found guilty of a lessor included charge Monday afternoon after a Lake County Jury heard evidence in the felony battery case.

Hammonds had been charged with aggravated battery which caused bodily harm to a man on March 8, 2017. The victim and Hammonds were arguing inside the Sunoco station at 1200 W.Main Street in Leesburg.

As the victim was leaving the store, Hammonds attacked him according to the evidence at trial. The victim was able to shove Hammonds to the ground. When Hammonds got up he threw a glass bottle at the victim which hit him causing a deep laceration to his forehead.

The jury held that Hammonds had committed a felony battery with a weapon. The court ordered a pre-sentence investigation to be completed with sentencing set for Aug. 17. Hammonds had a number of previous felony convictions.

The alleged murder occurred on Nov. 11, 2017 when Hammonds was identified by witnesses as the man who shot the victim after demanding the man pay a debt. At the time of the killing Hammonds had 10 felony convictions.
