Glass containers can make unique winter gardens and gifts

For drought-tolerant plants that prefer lower humidity and drier soil, use open containers such as glass vases.

Create a garden under the glass for new, experienced and even reluctant gardeners to enjoy or give as a gift. This independent system allows you to easily become a successful gardener without excessive care.

Buy glass containers or reuse things hidden in basements, garages, or shed shelves. Even a cool glass container, bell jar or bell jar, with the open side facing down, can be used on a shallow planting tray. Just stick a decorative doorknob or handle on the top for easy access.

Make the festival more lively. Visit the decoration aisle of your favorite craft store. Use DIY Christmas balls to make mini glass containers for holiday decorations or perfect hostess gifts.

Use such closed glass containers when growing tropical plants. They thrive in high humidity and moist soil.

Close the top or use an open container, such as a glass vase or a mason jar for cacti and succulents. Mix cacti and succulents for these drought-tolerant plants. They prefer the lower humidity and drier soil provided by the open terrarium and cactus potting mix.

Once you have the container, you need to fill it with potting mix, plants, and other decorative items. Consider laying a layer of decorative stones, branches, sea glass or sand on the bottom to add color and interest. Some gardeners include a layer of charcoal to help absorb any odors. The key is not to water too much, because decorative stones and charcoal will not prevent flooded soil from killing your plants.

Consider covering the stone layer with black landscape fabric to prevent potting mix from filtering and covering these items. Cover it with a well-draining potting mix for tropical plants, and a succulent mix for drought-tolerant plants. If space allows for increased interest, add contour lines to the soil level.

Choose plants of different heights, textures and colors to create a charming terrarium garden. Many garden centers now sell small specimens suitable for these mini gardens.

Low-growing tropical plants, such as baby tears, creeping figs, mosses, and ivy, are excellent ground cover plants. Small specimens of dracaena, croton, palm and podocarpus have good upright characteristics. Fill the middle area with ferns, nerve plants, polka dot plants, etc.

Once assembled, glass containers are relatively easy to manage. Wet the soil and cover. If condensation appears on the glass, open the lid. Then replace the cover and monitor the soil moisture and condensation. Add extra moisture carefully. Watering turkeys is an easy way to only water plants that need water.

Place your glass container in a bright location away from direct light. When you place plants in a sunny place, heat will accumulate and cook in this covered ecosystem.

Now is the best time to collect or buy interesting glassware, planting and decoration items, and of course plants. Then take a break during the busy holiday and plant some holiday decorations and green gifts for your loved ones.
