The Green Coffee Import Cooperative Cooperative Coffees and the non-profit organization The Chain Collaborative will begin this week to host a three-part webinar series aimed at addressing the biggest existential threat of coffee: climate change.

Specifically, the webinar will use carbon storage as a tool that can be used not only for farm-level climate resilience, but also for a scalable and sustainable approach throughout the coffee value chain.

The webinar will have live Spanish translation in English and will focus on the science behind carbon smart agriculture, coffee farm-level carbon storage and measurement tools, and opportunities for traders, roasters, or NGOs to participate in carbon And action.

This webinar series coincides with the three-year Cool Farm Tool project funded by IDB Labs, Cooperative Coffees, The Chain Collaborative, Root Capital, Sustainable Food Lab, and six organic coffee cooperatives in Honduras, Guatemala, and Peru. Held.

These organizations have been experimenting with the Cool Farm Tool, which aims to enable farmers to track and understand the environmental impact of their production practices, while determining best practices for climate resilience and crop health. The project leader is now improving the Cool Farm tool for coffee for wider implementation, involving about 200 small organic coffee farmers.

"Based on the preliminary feedback from the completed pilot, the coffee specific module and its related data points/issues are being updated," Nora Burkey, the founder and executive director of Chain Collaborative, told DCN via email. "The goal is that the tool can most accurately reflect the carbon capture of coffee farms-based on life cycle analysis-and provide correct recommendations for improving practices."

Burkey will host an upcoming webinar series with Monika Firl of Cooperative Coffees and Elizabeth Teague of Root Capital.

Confirmed speakers include representatives of farmers from the COMSA cooperative in Honduras, representatives of members of the Cooperative Coffees company Michael King (Bean North Roasting Company) and Anne Costello (Peace Coffee), Cinzia Fissore of Whittier College, Inka Sachse of Soil and more influences Solis with Juan Pablo Fair Trade International.

The webinars will be held on October 21, November 4, and November 18 at 11 a.m. Eastern Time. This is the registration link (Zoom).
