Louisville craft breweries with outdoor patio space to try this summer

Louisville is know for bourbon and horse racing, but its growing craft beer scene is right up there these days.

There are dozens of breweries all around Louisville serving house brews, seasonal offerings, experimental, special brews, German lagers and light and dark brews, on tap, in cans and in bottles. Most of breweries also serve food or have restaurants nearby and patio or outside seating. 

Here are a few places with outdoor patio space where you can try some craft beers at local breweries. 

WHAT: Great beer and good food. Beers on tap, bottle and cans with select beers on draft for crowler fills. Menu includes Bavarian pretzel, chicken wings, house fried pork rinds, burgers, chicken wrap, fish sandwich, salads, fries, brussels sprouts, potato salad, pasta salad and more. Vegan option. 

HOURS: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Wednesday; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.  Sunday

WHAT: Serving a series of ever evolving experimental and true-to-style beers. It averages about 20 beers on tap and beers in cans. For hungry taproom guests, the brewery's food partner Daryk’s will serve burgers, tacos, tenders, vegan options, and loaded fries (noon to 8 pm. daily, food truck).  

WHEN: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily

WHAT: The laid-back microbrewery offers house made beers, always on tap standards, seasonal offerings and special brews, food and outdoor seating. Menu includes sandwiches and burgers with kettle chips, soup, salad, stir fry, tacos, chicken tenders, fish, hot brown and more.

WHEN: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 2-8 p.m. Sunday

WHAT: They have seen prohibition, pandemics, world wars, ups and downs, triumphs and defeat, and Falls City Beer is still here. It was founded in 1905 by Ben Schrader and a group of local tavern owners and grocers. Because of declining sales, Falls City closed its door in 1978 and reopened in the late 2000s serving a variety of craft brews, draft beer and seasonal beers in a laid-back atmosphere. For hungry guests, Bandido Taqueria is next door and welcomes all guests to bring in outside food. 

HOURS: 4-10 p.m. Monday-Wednesday; noon to 10 p.m. Thursday; noon to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 1-8 p.m. Sunday.

WHAT: Gordon Biersch, founded over 25 years ago, is where German precision brewing meets American craft beer creating clean, fresh German lagers and the finest American craft beer. Menu includes appetizers, salads, soups, baby back ribs, steaks, ribeye, poke mahi, tuna poke rice bowl, fish and chips, fish tacos, grilled salmon, pizza, burgers, sandwiches, desert and more.

WHAT: Great Flood has 20 taps, most of them house brews. The Shelbyville Restaurant and Brewery menu includes pizza, burgers, salad, mac and cheese, hot brown, fish and shrimp tacos, chicken tenders, chicken and cheese quesadilla, sides and more. The Highland Taproom does not have a kitchen but encourages guest to bring whatever food items they desire. There are a number of great restaurants mere steps from the bar (menus available at tables and bar).

WHAT: House-brewed beers and growler fills offered and live music on the weekends. For guest who are hungry, Twin Spires Pizza (next door) will deliver pizza to guest.

WHAT: The taproom and brewery are nestled behind a towering grain silo between downtown and the Original Highlands. The production space is separated from the taproom by a floor to ceiling glass wall allowing patrons to enjoy their favorite beer while watching them craft beer. Mile Wide has more than 15 beers on tap, also board games and a game room with a few classic arcade and pinball machines, patio and beer garden. Mac's @ Mile Wide serves brick oven, Neapolitan-style pizzas, wings, salads, small bites and desserts.

HOURS: 4-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 2-11 p.m. Friday; noon to 11 p.m. Saturday; noon to 8 p.m. Sunday

WHAT: The brewery and restaurant located in the heart of the Schnitzelburg neighborhood has 20 beers on tap featuring a mix of flagships, rotating seasonal and one-off brews. The menu include bar snacks, house cut fries (BBQ pork fries, Togarashi fries and War/10), Germantown Reuben, bratwurst, burgers, smoked salmon, sunny schnitzel, jackfruit rice bowl, salads and more.

WHAT: Family owned brewery in the SoBro neighborhood. Its craft beer selections is a sketchbook of experiences that are constantly evolving featuring light beer, dark beer, fruit overtones, chocolate, sour flavors and more. Noble Hearth Craft Pizza located on premises adjacent to Noble Funk Brewing Company offers rotating specials as well as a menu that includes appetizers, salads, classic pizzas, and some signature favorite pizzas from their chefs. 

HOURS: 4-10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday; 3-10 Friday; 2-10 Saturday; 2-8 p.m. Sunday.

WHAT:  The Taproom and brewery has 19 beers on tap, beer in bottles and in cans. It does not serve food but you can order from various restaurants in the courtyard, bring in outside food or grab something at one of the establishments nearby. West Sixth has seating in the beer garden, outdoor courtyard, main bar area or upstairs when open. Guided tastings at 1 p.m. Saturdays.
