Aircraft crash, injury: Eastland Road

A Maple Heights man, 54, was injured by a falling drone at about 4 p.m. May 29 during the Berea National Rib Cook-Off & Beer Fest at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds, 164 Eastland.

The man suffered small cuts and swelling on his forearm. He said he didn’t need an ambulance. The man’s wife drove him to Southwest General Health Center in Middleburg Heights.

The drone’s owner -- a 43-year-old Killeen, Texas, man -- appeared, looking for his drone. He said the drone had fallen after hitting a tree.

Police asked the man if he had permission to fly the drone over the fairgrounds. He said no. Police told the man he’s not supposed to fly a drone over private property or a crowd of people.

Police confiscated the drone as evidence and reported the incident to the Federal Aviation Administration. The case was also turned over to a prosecutor for possible charges.

Failure to control vehicle, open container of alcohol in vehicle: Front Street

A Brooklyn man, 18, was cited and given a court summons at about 10:30 p.m. May 26 after the Honda Civic he was driving hit a median on Front at West Grand Street.

A citizen called police after seeing the Civic, with at least one flat tire, stopped in the northbound lane of Front at West Grand. The citizen smelled marijuana on the man.

When police arrived, they observed that both driver’s-side tires were flat. The man was standing outside the Civic, and the car’s hood was raised.

Police smelled marijuana in the car, and the man admitted he had smoked marijuana four hours earlier. He denied drinking alcohol.

The man passed field sobriety tests. Police then searched the Honda and found one glass jar of marijuana. They also found three glass pipes, a digital scale and two marijuana grinders -- all with marijuana residue -- along with three open containers of beer.

Police had the Civic towed.

Two 15-year-old boys -- one from Middleburg Heights, the other from Berea -- were caught shoplifting merchandise at about 11:30 a.m. May 27 from CVS Pharmacy, 212 W. Bagley.

A CVS worker called police and described the boys. When police arrived, they spotted four boys, two of whom matched the descriptions, walking east away from CVS.

Police asked the boys if they had shoplifted. The Middleburg Heights boy admitted stealing only a small container of snacks, from which he was eating. However, police found a bag of stolen sunflower seeds in his hoodie and two stolen ice-cold beverages, along with another stolen snack container, in his backpack.

The Berea boy was carrying several stolen cold drinks in his backpack.

Police returned all the stolen merchandise to CVS, which chose not to pursue criminal charges but told police the boys were no longer allowed in the store. Police called the boys’ mothers.

Disturbance, damaged property: The Mall

A resident living on The Mall, a street in Berea, called police at about 10:30 p.m. May 29 and said juveniles were shooting jell-ball guns at each other outside his home, causing damage to his car.

Police observed several small scuffs and a small dent on the car’s hood. They told the man the incident was a civil matter, not a criminal case, but the man wanted to press charges against the juveniles. Police were still looking into the incident at the time of the report.

Disorderly conduct, marijuana possession: East Bagley Road

Two Brook Park boys -- one 16, the other 15 -- face disorderly conduct charges after they were caught fighting in a bathroom at about noon May 25 in Berea-Midpark High School, 165 E. Bagley.

Both boys said they had fought to entertain other pupils, who wanted to see a fight.

School officials found two marijuana vape cartridges in the younger boy’s backpack, so he will face additional charges.
