Phil Your Glass: A crisp sauvignon blanc for clambake season

This is Phil Masturzo, and I'm listening.

No I haven’t started a radio show spinoff to rival wine oenophile and Seattle psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane. However, I hear your white wine suggestions and wanted to recommend a bottle of Girard sauvignon blanc.

Sauvignon blanc is the second-most-popular white wine in the world, according to a recent post in The Small Winemakers Collection. Sales of this white wine increased 38% in 2021.

I found 70 different labels after a quick scan of the sauvignon blanc section at Acme No. 1. Then I came across 16 more bottles in the New Zealand section where sauvignon blanc is its most famous wine. And still more under the French wine heading. Wine specialist Mylene Albanese said the refreshing, crisp white varietal is a big seller for the store.

I grew quite smitten after sampling the $18.99 Girard sauvignon blanc at a recent Friday tasting at Regency Wines in Fairlawn. I picked up a bottle for further research.

Lucky for me, I found that sauvignon blanc loves goat cheese as much as I do. My new favorite is a hunk of LaClare Family Creamery’s goat milk cheddar from Beau’s Market in Copley and this Napa Valley wine. They went together like Batman and Robin. The wine's lively acidity and crisp citrus flavors are balanced with the acidity in the cheese, creating a wonderful mouthfeel with every sip and nibble.

Since it is clambake season, I had to have a glass of this sauvignon blanc with a pot of freshly steamed clams and mussels. I like to add a splash of the wine I am drinking to my garlic and white wine sauce. This helps create a harmonious flavor profile with the dish. Unless of course you are opening a $288 Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux. Then you may want to savor every last drop and look for a less prestigious sauvignon blanc to add to your broth.
