Tequila has become a much-loved spirit over the past decade. Once reserved for shots on a big night out, tequila has elevated itself to a niche spirit drunk by sophisticated men and women who want something other than vodka or whiskey. Sales of the yummy liquid have increased by as much as 30% since 2014 in the United States. The advent of tequila cocktails and an increase in boutique brands have all helped tequila become everybody’s new favorite alcoholic drink. And just like other spirits, there are premium tequila bottles available that rank as some of the most expensive tequila products on the market.

North America’s oldest distilled spirit, tequila was first introduced during the sixteenth century. Over time it has slowly grown to become one of the world’s most popular spirits. This has as much to do with the marketing of tequila as it does its versatility – tequila can be drunk straight, on the rocks, or as a cocktail. There are over 3,000 different brands of tequila in the world, and while most are relatively well priced, there is a new range of high-quality drops aimed at those who like the finer things in life.

The below list of expensive tequilas might be a little out of most people’s price range, but they are all worth mentioning. Some come in luxury bottles and packaging while others have a high price due to the way the tequila is aged. However they are made and bottled, these are 14 of the most expensive tequilas in the world.

When it comes to affordable tequila that’s still seen as high-end, Don Julio takes the cake. Although only 80 years old, the brand has become one of the most famous tequilas in America over the past few decades. Don Julio currently has nine different tequila expressions on the market, ranging from its Blanco Tequila all the way through to its Reposado Private Cask Tequila which is aged for ten months.

While these are all great tequilas, arguably the best version of this spirit comes in the form of the Don Julio Real Tequila. One of the first “Extra Anejo” ever released by the brand, it’s matured in oak barrels for up to five years. This gives it a smooth taste of chocolate, vanilla, and cooked agave. Due to its limited release, it’s very hard to find a bottle of Don Julio Real Tequila, with the few bottles out there continuing to rise in price every year.

This limited edition tequila from Herradura was released to celebrate the distiller’s 150th anniversary. The 100 months aged Extra Anejo is distilled from the finest blue weber agave and aged in American white oak barrels. This gives the tequila an aroma of vanilla with tasting notes of fruit, almonds, and cinnamon. Like any good tequila, it is best enjoyed straight or on the rocks.

As it is fairly recent, having only been released in 2020, this tasty tequila doesn’t have a huge price tag, although some may say $500 for a bottle is still a bit steep. However deep your pockets are, this is a fantastic tequila that comes in a stylish glass bottle that wouldn’t look out of place in any tequila collection.

DeLeon is another luxury tequila brand that only delivers the best tequila. Their collection consists of Blanco, Reposado, and Anejo tequilas, with the DeLeon Anejo Tequila the most expensive of the three. Only the best tequila is selected for this premium drop, which is first aged for just over a year in American oak barrels before finishing in French oak wine casks. This creates a gratifying flavor of caramel, oak, and dried fruit.

This premium version of the tequila comes in a solid decanter made from French glass with the brand’s iconic skull and snakes cap coming in black instead of gold. This is housed in a collector’s box that comes with a flask so you can enjoy your tequila on the go.

If you manage to track a bottle of this lush tequila down you can count yourself extremely lucky. Only a very limited number of bottles were released, and due to the age of the tequila, no more will ever be produced.

Fuenteseca 21 Years Old Vintage 1993 Extra Anejo Tequila is made from agave harvested in 1993. The agave was grown for nine years before being harvested, distilled, and aged in 180-liter Canadian white oak casks. For ten years the tequila was stored in the town of Atotniclo el Alto at a low altitude before being moved to the cooler climate and higher altitude of Chapingo, Jalisco, in the mountains above Atotniclo el Alto. Here the barrels sat for a further 11 years before being bottled in 2014 and distributed to a few very lucky owners.

Famous tequila brand Patron teamed with Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro for this limited edition release. The tequila is aged in a variety of oak barrels and blended together to produce this golden liquid. With an aroma of dry fruit and vanilla, this tequila from Patron has a sweet, oaky taste with an agave finish. While the tequila is top quality, it’s the bottle that really makes this tequila worth splashing out for.

Designed by Del Toro, the crystal bottle is shaped like a human chest with a skull stopper. The decanter actually has two chambers, one for the tequila and one for a liqueur that can be used in cocktails to enhance the flavor of the tequila. Along with the fancy bottle, the box it comes in features hand-drawn images by Del Toro and opens up to form a mini alter, complete with two candle holders.

The first of two Clase Azul tequilas to land on this list, the Ultra Extra Anejo Tequila is a limited expression that will set you back $1,700 a bottle. Only 100 bottles are released with each batch, with half available in Mexico and the other half in America. The tequila is made using 100% Tequilliana weber blue agave that is aged for a minimum of three years in sherry oak barrels from Spain.

The tequila itself is red in color and meant to be enjoyed slowly, so don’t go having shots. It comes in a traditional Talavera-style decanter that is adjourned with platinum, silver, and 24-carat-gold. It’s quite a stylish-looking bottle that would be a great addition to anyone’s home bar, providing you can afford it.

When it comes to fantastic tequila, 1800 Tequila leads the way. A trusted brand with many years of experience, 1800 Tequila has been supplying premium tequila to its customers for over 220 years. They have several different options available when it comes to their standard range of tequila, along with ready-made margarita mixes. When it comes to 1800 Tequila’s limited edition releases, you can’t look past the Colección Reserva Extra Añejo Tequila.

One of the rarest tequilas on the market, Colección Reserva is double disttled and aged in French wine barells. Each year of its release, the tequila is bottled in a decanter created by a different artist. The last release in 2013 was crafted by Los Angeles-based artist Gary Baseman. The extravagant silver bottle is said to depict the tragic love story between a Mexican warrior and a magical mermaid.

Only 2,000 bottles of this rich real tequila are made each year, which accounts for the steep retail price. It also has a bit to do with the bottle that has images and lettering made from 24-karat gold.

The tequila itself is 100% blue agave aged for ten years in French oak barrels. This gives it a mellow oaky flavor that warms the mouth. Similar to many of the tequilas on this list, due to the limited amount of bottles released, Barrique de Ponciano Porfidio usually sells out quickly, making it a real collector’s item for tequila aficionados.

AsomBroso Reserva Del Porto Expensive Tequila is an interesting concoction that is aged 12 years in sherry barrels from Portugal. This gives the tequila a much sweeter taste and a softer finish, making it an excellent sipping tequila. This high-end tequila is bottled in a crystal decanter based on the design of one found in an 18th-century castle in Europe. It took Ricardo Gamarra, the founder and CEO of AsomBroso, and Italian artist Luciano Gambaro over two years to perfect the bottle.

A silky smooth drop that’s 80 proof (ABV 40%), this is one of several special tequilas distilled by AsomBroso. According to the Robb Report, AsomBroso Reserva Del Porto is, “Aromatic and smooth, with toasted vanilla and honey notes (not to mention some nice heat), this tequila shows amazing depth, complexity, and length.”

Cincoro is the brainchild of five NBA owners: Emila Fazzalari and Wye Grousbeck of the Boston Celtics, Jeanie Buss of the Los Angeles Lakers, Wes Edens of the Milwaukee Bucks, and the great Michael Jordan of the Charlotte Hornets. Aimed at those with a palate for the finer things in life, there are four different Cincoro expressions; Anejo, Extra Anejo, Blanco, and Reposado.

While the standard Extra Anejo retails for a costly $1,500, it’s the Founder’s Series that really makes a dent in your wallet. While there isn’t anything different in terms of the way the tequila is made or the bottle it comes in (although it is 1.75L as opposed to 750ml), each of the Cincoro owners has signed the 523 bottles available for sale. The ability to have a bottle of tequila signed by Jordan is the main reason for the extravagant price.

The crown jewel in Patron’s collection of tequilas is this semi-affordable drop (depending on your yearly wage). One of the most popular tequila brands in the world, this is the second collaboration between the Mexican spirit and luxury French crystal brand Lalique.

The tequila is a wonderfully mature drop aged eight years in a combination of American oak, French oak, and sherry barrels. The result is a beautiful golden Extra Anejo with notes of fruit and sweet honey.

Lalique provides the bottle for this delicious tequila. It’s a clear-cut crystal decanter in an Art Deco style that comes in a wooden box engraved with the brand’s logo.

Clase Azul is relatively new when it comes to premium tequila brands, having only been around for about 25 odd years. Along with making tasty tequila, Clas Azul is known for its inspired decanters. They are like collectible art pieces, making each bottle of Clase Azul that extra bit special.

To celebrate the company’s 15th year in business, Clase Azul released the extremely limited Clase Azul Extra Anejo 15th Anniversary Edition Tequila. Only 15 of these bottles were made, with just two being available for general sale at $30,000 a pop.

This premium tequila is made from a blend of two reserves. The first was aged in Spanish barrels for 15 years while the other was aged for 11 years in Productos Finos de Agave Distillery. As you can imagine, with such a high price this tequila is not meant to be drunk as a shot before a night out with the boys. It’s the ideal sipping tequila for a quiet night at home with a cigar.

What also sets this tequila apart from other Clase Azul selections is the ceramic bottle with 24-karat gold decorations. 15 different Mexican artists were commissioned to each create a decanter, meaning no bottle is the same, only adding to its impressive price tag.

Tequila Ley is a premium brand that specializes in high-end tequila. In 2006 they released Tequila Ley .925 Ultra-Premium, which at that time, held the Guinness World Record for the most expensive tequila ever made. This yummy tequila is made using pure blue agave sap before being barrel-aged for six years.

As is often the case with expensive tequila, it’s the bottle that really makes the dollar value increase. Tequila Ley .925 Ultra-Premium comes housed in a decanter that combines pure white gold, yellow gold, and platinum to create a distinct bottle. It’s believed only 33 bottles were manufactured, making Tequila Ley .925 Ultra-Premium not only expensive but also very rare.

If money is no option then look no further than Tequila Ley .925 Diamante. It is the most expensive tequila on the market by a mile. It first went on sale 12 years ago (2010) and is made with qualitative 100% select Extra Añejo tequila . Aged in barrels for seven years before being bottled, Wine Style described this tequila as a “luxurious, rich, mild taste of pepper tequila reveals notes of hot spices, green olives, and roasted pineapple crust. The finish is perfect hues combined acute agave and herbs.” Tasty.

But it’s the bottle, not the tequila that makes Tequila Ley .925 Diamante such an expensive drink. Designed by Jose Davalos Mejia, it took ten months to craft and is made from two kilograms of platinum (one of the most expensive metals in the world) and decorated with 4,100 perfectly white diamonds. If the $3.5 million price tag is a little too steep, you can buy a regular 750ml bottle for around $75. It’s the same tequila, just without the expensive bottle.
